Nova Scotia Celebrates Food Day Canada

Little Neck  Clams and Indian Point Mussels steamed in Grand Pré L’Acadie Blanc, Applewood-smoked Leg of Gaspereau Valley Lamb, Nova Scotia Sea Bass on a warm garden vegetable salad “Nicoise” as well as Grilled Harpoon-caught Swordfish with organic blueberry salsa are just a few of the menu items featured in the Food Day Canada celebrations in Nova Scotia.

“It must become impossible for any Canadian to ignore the fact that we have extraordinary ingredients and tremendous talent in food production and in the kitchens of our nation,” says Anita Stewart, co-founder and president of Food Day Canada.

Food Day Canada, an annual mid-summer culinary celebration, is the largest national food event in the country. On Saturday, July 30, 2011 the following Taste of Nova Scotia restaurants have created locally-inspired menus for this year’s Food Day Canada celebration: Amherst Shore Country Inn, Blomidon Inn, Chanterelle Country Inn & Cottages, Chives Canadian Bistro, Fid Resto, Fleur de Sel, Le Caveau Restaurant, Normaway Inn,   Ryan Duffy’s and Tempest Restaurant.

DesBarres Manor Inn Names New Chef

Authentic Seacoast Resorts Proprietor Glynn Williams has announced the appointment of Joe MacLellan as the new Executive Chef at the Authentic Seacoast Resorts luxury property DesBarres Manor Inn. A native of Ohio, Nova Scotia, a small village outside of Antigonish, Chef MacLellan returns home after seven years of cooking in leading restaurants across Canada and internationally.

King’s Plate: Lunenburg’s Culinary Crown Jewel

Summer is finally upon us, and with it, a number of great “staycation” options exist within an hour drive of downtown Halifax. Last week, Kel and I decided to embark on an overnight getaway to Lunenburg to escape the hustle and bustle of the HRM for date night at King’s Plate. The romantic cooling effect of the salty sea air set the perfect tone for a relaxing evening after a hot day in the city.

Kel and I arrived at the Mariner King Historic Inn in downtown Lunenburg early on a Friday evening after a surprisingly short (just under 100kms from downtown Halifax) and incredibly scenic drive along the south shore through Queensland, Chester, and Mahone Bay.

24 Awards for Taste of Nova Scotia Wineries

Taste of Nova Scotia wineries received 24 awards, including four Double Gold medals, at the annual All Canadian Wine Championships in Windsor, Ontario this year.

“I’m particularly delighted with our awards, especially our Double Golds, at this last competition,” says Hans Christian Jost, owner of Jost Vineyards. “With the spectacular growing season we had last year, we were expecting great things from the 2010 harvest…these awards are confirmation of that.”

Nominations Now Open for Taste of Nova Scotia Prestige Awards

Halifax, N.S. – This summer, Taste of Nova Scotia is inviting food and wine enthusiasts to nominate their favourite restaurant, server, local food product as well as a Nova Scotia culinary ambassador. The annual Taste of Nova Scotia Prestige Awards is a celebration of excellence to honour producers and restaurants that provide exceptional culinary products and services.

“This is an opportunity to recognize our Taste members and their accomplishments… a chance to celebrate the best in our province,” says Janice Ruddock, executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia. “Consumers are a very important part of the culinary industry in Nova Scotia which is why we added consumer nominations to our selection process this year.”
