I live in Dartmouth. You know, the Darkside…we’ve all heard the less-than-complimentary nicknames, but it’s actually a pretty amazing place to live. I’ve chosen to live here for almost six years and I like it. House-hunters can get a lot more for their hard-earned money, I have an eight minute commute to my office, and I don’t pay a premium to be within stumbling distance from downtown Halifax. This is why it always gives me such satisfaction to find a new place to eat on the Dark Horse Side.
Last week, my partner and I went for dinner at Trendz Cafe & Wine Bar in the Best Western Hotel in Burnside. It’s been on my list of places to try for some time, so I was excited to finally get there. Walking into the restaurant certainly didn’t feel like walking into a hotel; it’s chic, warm and very inviting. Soft banquettes line the walls, inviting you to have a glass of wine and settle in for your evening. more…

The recipe below for Pudding Chomeur A La Lavallée is one of the delicious items included in brunch at Acadian Maple. more…

Walking past Saege Bistro constitutes one of the favourite parts of my day. Going to work, I always check out the fresh-cut flowers on the tables by the window. On my way home, I always stop to read the daily special board, which is always met with a reaction of “Ooooh…” much to the amusement of other pedestrians.
Saege is also home to some of my favourite food people in Halifax. Like he did back in November when I visited the Scanway catering kitchen, Geir Simensen sat down with me at Saege to talk about our mutual favourite thing: good food. more…

I like getting close to stuff, and there’s nothing like getting the chance to see an amazing (and delicious) family business up close. I mean really close. Like walk-away-munching-on-product-kind-of-close.
We had the chance to travel to the Eastern Shore and visit the Krauch family and their smoke house operation in Tangier. This family isn’t new to smoking things from the sea; they’ve been doing this since Willy Krauch started the business in 1956. J. Willy Krauch & Sons Ltd. has seen three generations perfect a very traditional means of preparing fish. We had the pleasure of meeting Alice, Willy’s daughter, and she took us for a wonderful tour of their facilities. more…
