Tidal Bay – Nova Scotia’s Appellation Wine

Halifax, N.S. – Tidal Bay is a new appellation white wine for Nova Scotia. On May 28, 2012, the Winery Association of Nova Scotia will host the official industry launch of Tidal Bay at the Atlantic Canada Wine Symposium in Halifax.
“European wine regions have long understood the importance of the development of wine appellations to highlight specific styles of wines…Nova Scotia’s passionate, artisan winemakers, along with our wine writers and educators, recognized that the concept could be an important one for an emerging, new style of aromatic white wine in Nova Scotia,” says Peter Gamble, international wine industry consultant and lead consultant on the Tidal Bay project. “And so just as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vinho Verde, Chablis and Chianti, to name but a few of hundreds, established formal appellations to protect and promote their distinct, high quality regional wines, so too, has Nova Scotia.”
Stylistically, Tidal Bay is a fresh, crisp, off-dry, still, white wine with a bright signature Nova Scotia aromatic component. The wines show vibrant, expressive fruit on the nose, along with a brisk minerality and a refreshingly crisp palate. Vintage-dated and made 100% from Nova Scotia grown grapes, the list of approved grape varieties permits winemakers to create an interesting array of expressive wines within a defined style.
“Tidal Bay highlights the characteristics given to our wines by the unique combination of climate and terroir in our province,” says Stewart Creaser, president of the Winery Association of Nova Scotia and co-owner of Avondale Sky Winery. “The project set strict standards including the grape varietals, how they must be grown and harvested, and finally strict standards on the wine making process. The result has been a world-class, quality wine style that is receiving recognition wherever it has been presented.“
To become an official Tidal Bay wine, each year, wineries submit their wine to a five person independent tasting panel that has been established to assess any wines that wish to use the “Tidal Bay” appellation. The panel is composed of the region’s top wine writers, wine educators, independent wine experts and sommeliers. Each vintage of each wine is assessed, and the panel’s decision is final.
For consumers, Tidal Bay will be on NSLC shelves starting Monday, June 11, 2012. It is a distinctive wine and the perfect accompaniment for Nova Scotia’s famous seafood cuisine.
Wineries with 2011 vintages of Tidal Bay include, Avondale Sky, Annapolis Highland Vineyards, Benjamin Bridge, Blomidon Estate Winery, Domaine de Grand Pré, Gaspereau Vineyards, Jost Vineyards, Luckett Vineyards, Petite Riviere Vineyards and Sainte-Famille Wines.
